We have used two ways to analyze the impact on performance between Avira vs Avast free:

  1. Boot time
  2. Performance of (CPU, Graphics, Memory and Disk operations)

To measure the effect on boot time we tested boot time in two different situations, firstly without antivirus and then with each anti-virus.

In boot time test, without the any anti-virus it took 28 seconds to boot. Avira showed no impact on system start up time while with Avast it took 30 seconds, which translates to a 2 second delay. Therefore Avast will delay your boot time slightly.

Secondly, when we measured the impact on performance in different areas, Avira scored slightly higher than Avast. However, the overall impact on performance of both the products on the system is really low.

User interface Avira Vs Avast

Avast

avast vs avira

Avast Cleanup has a simple interface that is nice and clear. There is only one simple action (run smart scan), which runs all seven Avast scans: compatibility, viruses, outdated software, browser add-ons, router issues, performance and weak passwords. The status of protection is indicated by color, green indicating that your system is protected.

There is a menu on the left with 4 groups list which is easy to explore, Status (home screen), Protection, Privacy and Performance.

Avira

avira vs avast

The interface for Avira looks visually much better after redesigning in 2018. However, it is not very smooth in terms of user experience.

When comparing Avast vs. Avira, instead of simple action buttons that make it easy to operate, Avira has several different elements, which attract user attention. These include ‘Get Pro’ and ‘Register’ buttons in the header, almost invisible button for a quick scan, and a bottom banner promoting mobile security.

The left menu is quite simple and enables the user to open quarantine (virus chest), schedule a scan or disable specific protection modules (real-time protection, firewall).

Just like Avast, the status of protection is indicated by green color and the message ‘Your computer is secure‘. There are also components such as ‘web protection’ and ‘mail protection’ available in the paid version.

Upselling in Avira is also not irritating, the only way to up sell within the interface is the ‘upgrade now’ button. There used to be a game mode in Avira, however, it has been removed in the new version.

System scan or update can be started directly from the main page. Although, it’s not very catchy to the eye. Settings option has been unusually placed at the bottom left part of the user interface.

Unfortunately, there is no language settings available in the software. It is somehow auto detected based on the settings of your system.
